Mattel Expects 'Avatar'
Toy Sales To Gain After DVD's Releaser
While "Avatar" has claimed the spot as
the largest-grossing movie ever, Mattel
Inc.'s (MAT) sales of the movie-themed
toys aren't expected to break any
records.
Sales of Mattel's line of action figures
based on the Twentieth Century Fox movie
are just "doing okay," Mattel Brands
President Neil Friedman told Dow Jones
Newswires at the 2010 Toy Fair in New
York.
However, Friedman said, the movie
release is skewed toward adults, and the
company expects to see better sales of
the toys when the DVD is released and
more children are exposed to the
franchise.
The toy line, developed in partnership
with Twentieth Century Fox licensing and
merchandising, features heroes,
creatures and vehicles straight from the
James Cameron-directed film. The toy
line also features a 3D Web tag called i-TAG
that can be scanned by a Webcam. Once
scanned, the small plastic card shows 3D
animated models of the action figures
performing combat moves.
Twentieth Century Fox is owned by News
Corp. (NWSA), which also owns Dow Jones
& Co., publisher of this newswire and
The Wall Street Journal.
Mattel has announced within the last six
months a string of licensing agreements,
including a deal with World Wrestling
Entertainment Inc. (WWE) to produce WWE
action figures and accessories.
The new line of action figures and toys
is targeted at children and collectors,
and will include action figures with
flex-loaded arms and legs, as well as
championship belts, wrestling rings and
other related toys.
Jakks Pacific Inc. (JAKK) manufactured
WWE toys for more than a decade.
Friedman said one of the biggest
differences between the Jakks Pacific
line and Mattel's line is that the new
toys are manufactured to scale, meaning
that an Andre the Giant figure is now
much larger than that of wrestler Triple
H. He also noted that overall sales of
the WWE line are growing from past years
and the company's championship wrestling
belts are flying off the shelves.
A part of the reason for those sales and
the strength of the company's recent
quarter is because "the consumer is
feeling better and the toy industry has
a lot more energy," said Friedman.

Avatar Claims Highest
Gross of All Time
Avatar has
sailed past Titanic to
become the highest-grossing movie of all
time. In just 47 days, Avatar has
grossed $601.1 million, while Titanic made
$600.8 million in its entire run and
took 252 days to cross the $600 million
mark.
With this
milestone, Avatar has
completed the triple crown of box office
gross records: first, it topped the
foreign-only chart on Jan. 23, then it
reigned over the worldwide chart
(foreign plus domestic) on Jan. 25, and
now, as of Feb. 2, it resides atop the
domestic chart. Its foreign haul has
risen to $1.474 billion. Add in
domestic, and its worldwide gross stands
at an incredible $2.075 billion.
Breaking
domestic down, nearly 81 percent of Avatar's
gross is from 3D presentations. Normal
3D accounts for over 64 percent of the
gross, while IMAX 3D accounts for more
than 16 percent. That leaves the 2D
theaters with an over 19 percent share
of the gross.

Avatar Breaks Titanic's
Foreign Record
On Saturday, its 37th day, Avatar
surpassed The
Dark Knight's
$533.3 million total to become the
second highest-grossing movie of all
time, though, in terms of attendance, it
likely hasn't yet cracked the Top 50. At
its current trajectory, Avatar will
exceed Titanic's $600.8 million
total within two weeks. In 38 days, Avatar's
tally stands at $551.7 million, 80
percent of which from 3D presentations
(including 16 percent from IMAX venues
alone).
Overseas, Avatar had
another $100 million plus gross, easing
just 16 percent from holdovers alone and
setting a new sixth week benchmark. On
Saturday, it laid claim to a record that
was once deemed unobtainable: biggest
foreign gross ever, eclipsing Titanic's
$1.24 billion. Through Sunday, Avatar has
tallied nearly $1.29 billion. Italy was
its top market of the week with $13.3
million (down only eight percent), while
China was second with $12.5 million (off
31 percent for a record-breaking $103.1
million total), despite the communist
government stripping it of its 2D
screens, and France was third with $10
million (down ten percent). Worldwide, Avatar is
a smidgen behind Titanic's
$1.84 billion and will handily achieve
the top spot on Monday.

Avatar is close to sinking Titanic
Posted at LATimes.com:
The 3-D blockbuster rakes in $143 million worldwide
this weekend, putting its total just $2 million
short of the mark set 12 years ago.
"Avatar" grossed $107 million overseas, combined
with $36 million in the U.S. and Canada, bringing
its worldwide total to $1.841 billion. It's just $2
million short of the $1.843-billion world-record
gross set by "Titanic" in 1998, a mark it will
easily pass Monday. Of course, with 12 years of
ticket price inflation and surcharges on the vast
majority of screens where moviegoers are seeing the
new film in 3-D, "Avatar" still lags far behind
"Titanic" in attendance.

Avatar is Now More Than A Movie!
Posted at
LATimes.com:
Remember when "Avatar"
was just a movie?
There have been
breathless reports that
"Avatar" is so
vivid and so
powerful that moviegoers
walk out feeling let
down by the gray world
here on boring old
Terra. "Movie-goers
feel depressed and even
suicidal at not being
able to visit utopian
alien planet"
may sound like a
headline from
The Onion but,
nope, there it was
in
the Daily Mail
of London and,
a day earlier,
on
CNN,
which quoted a forum
post by someone named
Mike
who glumly said that the
majesty of the movie has
left him feeling, um,
blue. "I even
contemplate suicide
thinking that if I do it
I will be rebirthed in a
world similar to Pandora
and the everything is
the same as in 'Avatar.'
"
That's got
to be a joke, right?
Well, it's hard to say.
"Avatar" is becoming
something more than a
projected popcorn
experience as it echoes
through the world.
Forget entertainment,
this is now a topic of
debate in religious,
political, economic and
cultural circles.
James Cameron's
jungle-moon epic is
climbing toward $2
billion in worldwide box
office and after a
victorious night at
the Golden Globes, the
film about blue
cat-people has to be
considered the
favorite at the Oscars.
How serious is Hollywood
taking the sci-fi film?
Well consider the fact
that nobody
at the Globes banquet
laughed out loud when
the Cameron gave part of
his acceptance speech in
the nutty alien language
spoken by his
(literally) tree-hugging
aliens.

Avatar passes Star Wars With $491.8 million
Posted at Yahoo.com:
James Cameron's "Avatar" had a $41.3 million
weekend to shoot past "Star Wars" as the No.
3 movie on the all-time domestic box office
charts. Next stop, "The Dark Knight." No. 1
for the fifth-straight weekend, Cameron's
sci-fi saga raised its domestic total to
$491.8 million and should top $500 million
after revenues are counted on Martin Luther
King Day, according to studio estimates
Sunday.
Worldwide, 20th Century Fox's "Avatar"
lifted its total to $1.6 billion, second
only to Cameron's last movie, 1997's
"Titanic," at $1.8 billion. "One guy makes
two movies in 10 years, and they're by far
